A julep was originally a medicinal syrup, and the mint julep as a Southern drink predates bourbon in it — early versions used brandy or rum. It appears in American print by the early 1800s and was described by Kentucky senator Henry Clay’s circle well before it became the Kentucky Derby’s official drink in 1938.
