Descended from the Martinez — gin, sweet vermouth, maraschino and bitters — which appears in late-19th-century bar books. Over roughly forty years it dried out: sweet vermouth gave way to dry, the maraschino disappeared, the proportions shifted steadily toward gin, and the bitters became optional. There is no single inventor; there is a long drift.
