Cuban in origin, with a widely repeated ancestor in the Draque — a 16th-century mix of aguardiente, lime, sugar and mint used as a remedy. The modern rum version is associated with Havana bars of the early 20th century, La Bodeguita del Medio most famously, though that bar’s Hemingway connection is largely a marketing invention.
