A commercial solution to two slow-moving products. John G. Martin had bought Smirnoff and could not sell vodka to Americans; Jack Morgan of the Cock ‘n’ Bull on Sunset Strip had ginger beer nobody wanted. The copper mug was reportedly a third party’s unsold stock. Martin then photographed bartenders holding the mug at bars across the country and left a print behind each time — one of the first viral drink campaigns.
