Aperol was created by Silvio and Luigi Barbieri in Padua in 1919. The spritz itself is older and northern Italian — the name comes from the Austrian habit of splashing (spritzen) water into local wine during Habsburg rule of the Veneto. The Aperol version became the default spritz across Italy and then internationally from the 2000s onward.
