Cape Codder
A Cape Codder builds vodka, sweetened cranberry juice and lime juice over ice for a tart red highball finished with a fresh lime wheel.
Built to the standard modern spec; not yet tested in our kitchen. How we test.
The recipe.
Scaling adjusts quantities only. Prepare shaken drinks in individual portions.
Let’s make a good drink.
Fill a highball glass with ice and choose a common measure for the parts.
Add the vodka, cranberry juice and lime juice at the listed ratio.
Stir gently to combine and finish with a lime wheel.
A thoughtful finish
- Fresh lime juice matters because it is a measured component, not only a garnish.
- Choose sweetened cranberry juice cocktail for this published ratio.
- Use a glass that leaves room for ice as well as all seven liquid parts.
Common mistakes
- Using cranberry concentrate can make the drink too sharp.
- Skipping measured lime juice produces a simpler vodka-cranberry version.
- Confusing a lime wheel with lime juice omits an ingredient from this build.
A few good questions.
Does Cape Codder include lime juice?
This Absolut version includes a measured half part; simpler vodka-cranberry versions often use lime only as a garnish.
Can I use unsweetened cranberry juice?
That is an adaptation with a much tarter balance; the cited ingredient is sweetened cranberry juice.
Should I shake it?
No. This version is built and gently mixed in its serving glass.
How do I scale the drink?
Use the same part size for all three liquids and change that size for a smaller or larger serving.
Variations
- Vodka-cranberry — simplified adaptation — Omit the measured lime juice for a simpler serve, keeping a lime garnish if preferred.
- Smaller serving — serving adaptation — Reduce the size of the common part measure for every liquid.
