The recipe.
Scaling adjusts quantities only. Prepare shaken drinks in individual portions.
Let’s make a good drink.
Chill a shot glass and prepare the garnish before mixing.
Pour the measured butterscotch schnapps into the chilled shot glass.
Pour the Irish cream slowly over the back of a spoon to create the upper layer.
Serve immediately without stirring.
A thoughtful finish
- Rest the spoon near the lower layer and pour the cream slowly so the layers stay distinct.
- Use a small glass that has room for both liqueur measures; this build is 1½ oz before any mixing.
- Keep both liqueurs cold and the glass steady while forming the layers.
Common mistakes
- Pouring the cream from high above the glass drives it through the schnapps and mixes the layers.
- Warm liqueurs and a fast pour make distinct layers more difficult to form.
- Stirring after layering removes the two-layer presentation.
A few good questions.
What is in a Buttery Nipple?
Buttery Nipple is made with butterscotch schnapps layered with Irish cream in a sweet two-liqueur shot.
Can I scale a Buttery Nipple for more servings?
Multiply every measured ingredient by the same serving count. Prepare the measured still ingredients ahead if useful, but chill, shake or stir each serving as directed; add any carbonated finish at service.
Can I mix a Buttery Nipple instead of layering it?
You can combine the same measured liqueurs, but the two-layer presentation disappears. Label that serving as an unlayered variation.
What glass should I use for a Buttery Nipple?
Use the assigned shot glass for this directory serving. Where that differs from the source’s presentation, the version note labels the serving adaptation.
Variations
- Mixed presentation — Editorial serving variation: combine the same two measured liqueurs instead of layering them; the texture and appearance change, while the ingredient proportions stay the same.
- Another Irish cream — Editorial bottle variation: use another Irish cream at the listed measure and label the bottle; sweetness and alcohol content may differ.
