The Caribe Hilton credits bartender Ramón ‘Monchito’ Marrero with the drink in 1954; a second Caribe Hilton bartender, Ricardo García, has also been credited, and Barrachina in Old San Juan claims it for Ramón Portas Mingot in 1963. The Caribe Hilton claim is the oldest and best documented. Puerto Rico named it the official territorial drink in 1978.
