Sip & Garnish1 pinch Grated Nutmeg, 1 slice Orange Slice
Step by step

Let’s make a good drink.

  1. Fill a hurricane or tall glass with ice.

  2. Add the rum, lime juice, syrup, orange juice, pineapple juice, grenadine and bitters to a shaker, fill with ice, and shake for 10 seconds.

  3. Strain over the ice.

  4. Grate nutmeg over the top and garnish with an orange slice.

A thoughtful finish

  • Keep the lime at three-quarters of an ounce and the syrup at half. Fruit juice brings its own sugar, and most rum punches are too sweet because the ratio was forgotten.
  • The nutmeg and bitters are what make it a punch rather than a juice; do not skip them.
  • For a crowd, multiply by ten in a pitcher, skip the shake, and add ice at the table.

Common mistakes

  • Sweetened juices plus syrup plus grenadine. Taste as you go.
  • A light rum. The drink wants Jamaican or Bajan depth.
  • Serving it warm. It should be very cold and well diluted.

A few good questions.

What is the rum punch ratio?

One part sour, two parts sweet, three parts strong, four parts weak. Here the lime is the sour, syrup and grenadine the sweet, rum the strong, and the juices the weak.

What is the difference between Rum Punch and Planter's Punch?

Mostly the 'weak': Planter's Punch traditionally uses water or soda, Rum Punch uses fruit juice. They share the ratio and the rum.

Which rum?

A dark Jamaican or Barbados rum. An aged rum with character; not a spiced one, not a white one.

Can I batch it?

It was always a bowl drink. Mix everything but the ice ahead and chill; add ice and nutmeg when you serve.

Where it comes from

c. 1600s; modern form 20th century · Caribbean

Contested. More than one origin is claimed for this drink. We show the competing accounts rather than pick one.

Rum punch is the Caribbean’s oldest mixed drink: the English punch formula of the 1600s — spirit, sugar, citrus, water, spice — made with the islands’ own rum, and the rhyme that fixed it, one of sour, two of sweet, three of strong, four of weak, has been recited in Jamaica and Barbados since at least the 1870s. The modern beach-bar rum punch replaces the water with orange and pineapple juice, adds grenadine for colour and nutmeg on top, and is served from a jug or a plastic cup on every island with a tourist. There is no inventor. The ratio is the recipe and every bar’s version is correct.
