Step by step

Let’s make a good drink.

  1. Chill a coupe and prepare a lime wheel.

  2. Measure the rum, lime juice and simple syrup into a shaker.

  3. Add ice and shake until thoroughly cold.

  4. Strain into the coupe and add the lime wheel.

A thoughtful finish

  • Use ordinary simple syrup for this build; rich syrup changes the sweetness at the same volume.
  • Measure the lime after removing seeds.
  • The coupe is a labeled serving adaptation of the source’s tumbler presentation.

Common mistakes

  • Adding egg white changes the texture and preparation of this egg-free version.
  • Using lime cordial instead of juice adds another sweetener.
  • Assuming every Rum Sour uses these amounts overlooks published differences.

A few good questions.

Does this Rum Sour contain egg white?

No. Mount Gay’s cited formula is egg-free.

Does it use lemon or lime?

This version uses fresh lime juice.

Why is it served in a coupe here?

The assigned directory glass is a coupe; the company source serves a tumbler, so this is identified as a serving adaptation.

Can I use another rum?

Yes, as an ingredient adaptation. Keep track of the bottle because rum sweetness and flavor vary.

Variations

  • Source tumbler presentation — Use a tumbler instead of the assigned coupe to follow the company’s serving glass.
  • Different aged rum — ingredient adaptation — Try another aged rum at the same measure and identify the bottle used.
