A Sloe Gin Fizz shakes sloe gin, fresh lemon and rich sugar syrup, then adds soda over ice for a berry-flavored, gently sparkling long drink.
Built to the standard modern spec; not yet tested in our kitchen. How we test.
The recipe.
Scaling adjusts quantities only. Prepare shaken drinks in individual portions.
Let’s make a good drink.
Fill a Collins glass with ice and prepare a lemon peel.
Add the sloe gin, lemon juice and rich syrup to a shaker.
Add ice, shake until cold and strain into the prepared glass.
Top with soda, mix gently and finish with the lemon peel.
A thoughtful finish
- Keep soda cold so the drink stays lively after mixing.
- Use sloe gin, which is a flavored liqueur, rather than unflavored gin.
- Leave enough space in the serving glass for soda before pouring.
Common mistakes
- Shaking the soda can make the sealed shaker open under pressure.
- Using a much larger syrup measure can hide the berry flavor.
- Adding soda long before serving allows carbonation to fade.
A few good questions.
Does this Sloe Gin Fizz contain egg white?
No. The cited Hayman’s version is made without egg white.
What is rich syrup?
It is sugar syrup made at a 2:1 sugar-to-water ratio; that is the syrup strength specified here.
How much soda should I use?
Top up the ice-filled glass. The source gives no exact soda volume.
Can I use ordinary gin?
That would be a different gin fizz, because ordinary gin lacks the sloe fruit and liqueur sweetness.
Variations
- Less soda — serving adaptation — Use a smaller top-up for a shorter drink; this is a preference change, not a fixed alternate spec.
- Without lemon peel — garnish adaptation — Omit the peel if preferred; keep the measured liquid formula intact.
