Step by step

Let’s make a good drink.

  1. Chill a coupe and prepare a thin orange slice.

  2. Measure the whiskey, vermouth, Chartreuse and bitters into a mixing glass.

  3. Add ice and stir until cold, tasting a small drop to check dilution.

  4. Strain into the coupe and add the orange slice.

A thoughtful finish

  • Keep the orange slice thin so it fits neatly in the coupe.
  • Measure Chartreuse carefully; its concentrated herbal flavor can dominate.
  • Refrigerate opened vermouth and use it while its aroma remains fresh.

Common mistakes

  • Replacing green Chartreuse with yellow Chartreuse makes a different version.
  • Adding syrup before tasting can make the drink unnecessarily sweet.
  • Stirring with only a few melting cubes makes dilution harder to control.

A few good questions.

Which whiskey goes in a Tipperary?

Irish whiskey is the base of this published version.

Can I use yellow Chartreuse?

You can make an adaptation, but yellow Chartreuse has a different strength and flavor.

Does Tipperary need citrus juice?

No. The orange is a garnish in this version, not a juice ingredient.

Can I serve it over ice?

Yes, as a serving adaptation. Fresh ice will continue diluting it after mixing.

Variations

  • On ice — serving adaptation — Strain over fresh ice in a rocks glass for a longer, gradually diluting serve.
  • Orange peel — garnish adaptation — Use an expressed orange peel instead of the published orange slice for aroma without fruit in the glass.
